Playing football since freshman year, Sam Melcher has set the standard of toughness. From scoring countless touchdowns on offense to ruining teams plays on defense, Sam Melcher continues to be a matchup nightmare for opposing teams.
At the young age of five, Melcher first started watching football and fell in love with it instantly. He loved the idea of playing a sport and being able to give it his all and push himself to his limits. Football gave him the opportunity to play his heart out and put his body on the line for his team.
As a senior, Melcher has not shied away from the spotlight where he plays both offense and defense every night. He is the starting tight end on offense where he leads the team in receiving touchdowns, and also plays linebacker on defense where he leads the team in tackles per game. When asked how he prepares himself for both tight end and linebacker, for linebacker he states, “Linebacker its being strong mentally and physically, even if you get beat, learn from your mistakes and do better on every next rep.” When playing offense as the tight end he states, “Just giving it your full effort is really all that matters that you can concentrate and figure out the spots in the defense from tight end is really big mentally and physically.”

Melcher gives credit to his former teammates that have graduated from Valley Christian, stating how as a freshman he would look up to the seniors and see how they pushed themselves to be better. The cycle continues as Melcher is now a senior and states how he does the same thing. It motivates him to work hard since as a senior he has younger teammates looking up to him, and if he pushes himself, he’s not just making himself better, but those around him better.
For Valley Christian’s football team, Melcher holds the role as the defensive captain of the team. When having a designated role like the defensive captain, Melcher makes sure to show leadership.
“Leadership is not just criticizing those around you, but also letting them know that they’re doing fine. I feel like encouragement can just be as good as criticism and letting players know that they’re doing stuff good, but also to correct them on the stuff that they’re doing bad from a leadership role, I feel like is key.”
When asked what is one advice you would give to your freshman self on the first day of football practice, Melcher said, “Work hard and know that my time would eventually come where I would be able to show my skills out on the football field.” Looking back at his high school career, when asked what his favorite moment has been, it was an obvious choice. His junior year the varsity football team won the CIF championship.
Of course winning the whole thing is something he will never forget, yet he also said how he loved the atmosphere of the games. Each game were tough physical games to play in which made winning the championship just more rewarding. Melcher states how as a senior who has been playing since freshman year, it’s hard to be graduating soon and finishing his high school football career. Melcher is most thankful for the memories he has made along the way. He says he has especially focused on soaking in the moment and the experience with his teammates in his final year and not worrying about the end. Melcher is forever grateful for the opportunity to play football and says how it has been one of the greatest experiences of his life.
As the regular season is coming to an end, Sam Melcher has proven to us that he has grown into more than just a two-way player. He will be remembered through the effort he gave, and the standard of toughness he set for those who follow. Sam Melcher has proven that impact goes beyond the two positions, leaving behind a legacy built on discipline and leadership.
